Quiz night cancelled

With Gort and its surrounding areas particularly badly hit by the recent weather resulting in extensive flooding, we've unfortunately decided to cancel the quiz night which was arranged for this Friday, 27th in O'Gradys bar in Gort.

We will be looking to reschedule so keep your eyes peeled for notices of the new date.

Carrick match cancelled

Due to the inclement weather, the away match against Carrick scheduled for Sunday, 22nd November was cancelled. Rearranged date yet to be announced.

Fundraising quiz night

Get out the encyclopedias and reference books and brush up on your general knowledge for the Gort RFC fundraising table quiz in O'Grady's Bar, The Square, Gort, on Friday, 27th November.

Kick-off is 9:00pm sharp, and entries will be for tables of 4. Prizes will be available for the 1st, 2nd and 3rd placed teams and there will be raffles on the night as well.

It should be a fun night so book the babysitter and come alone and have some fun.

Ballyhaunis match rescheduled for Nov 29th

The next home match will be against Ballyhaunis which needed to be reschduled due to the non-show of the match referee on Oct 11th. The game will be played on Nov 29th.

Gort beat Connemara at home

Gort deservedly got the better of Connemara 15-8 at home on Sunday, 8th November, in a great game of rugby. Scores came courtesy of 2 Noel Glynn tries, a breakaway in the first half and a cracking solo run in the second half, and a penalty and conversion from Gary O'Donnell.

Thanks to everyone who turned up to watch the match.

Next match is away to Carrick on Nov 22nd.

Thanks to Minihane's Supervalu

A word of thanks to Minihane's Supervalu in Gort for allowing the club to raise some much welcome funds packing bags over the bank holiday wekend.

Much appreciated by the club.

Thanks Peter.

Convincing win for Dunmore

Another defeat on Sunday, 1st November, this time away to Dunmore where the lads went down to a 21-0 loss.

Next match is at home against Connemara on Nov 8th. Looking for as many fans of the club as possible to turn up on the day and provide as much support as we can.

Gort Minis at the Connacht - Scarlets game

Gort Mini rugby was part of the half time entertainment at the Connacht - Scarlets match at the Sportsground on Friday, 30th October. Given that Connacht played well and won, rumours that the half-time match was more entertaining than the main attraction is maybe a little unfair (this time!).

Heavy defeat to West Offaly Lions

Gort went down to a heavy away defeat to the West Offaly Lions 32-3 on 18th October. To make matters worse, Pat Hayes was taken to hospital with a dislocated shoulder. Of course, we all hope Pat makes a speedy recovery back to full fitness.

Next match is away to Dunmore on Nov 1st before the next home match, against Connemara on Nov 8th.

Ballyhaunis game reduced to friendly status

Unfortunately, the match against Ballyhaunis on Sunday, 11th October will not count in the league as the official match referee was unable to make it to the game.

The players got a run out in the end with one of the Ballyhaunis party volunteering to referee. Gort ran out impressive 29-3 winners in the end of a competitive run out.

Season kicks off with first win

The season kick started itself with a fine win with a 2 point victory against UCG in Galway on Saturday, 3rd October. Final score was UCG 17 - 19 Gort.

The victory was all the more significant considering we started the game with 13 players and didn't get 15 players on the field until 15 minutes was gone. Special mention goes to Tony O'Donnell and Tom Finneran who didn't expect to have to kit out to make up the numbers.

Points came courtesy of 3 tries from Noel Glynn, Jason Glynn and Declan Nonelly, with 2 successful conversions from Gary O'Donnell

Robert Lahiffe moving on

Robert has resigned his position of Connacht Branch Rep for Gort RFC as he has moved to the position of assistant secretary for the Connacht Branch. The club is delighted to have Ray Dolan step into Robert's role as branch rep. The club of course wished Robert all the best in his new role with the big boys.

Well beaten in opening league match

The season got off to a losing start on Sunday, 27th September with a 39-3 loss at home to Creggs, who are expected to have a strong campaign this season. Given the team has had very little time together, it was always going to be tough ask to get anything out of this game.

Welcome to Season 2009/2010

The club is actively looking at ways to expand and encourage participation at all levels, through mini and underage all the way up to the senior level. Given the success of Rugby at international level, with the recent 6 nations, triple crown, and grand slam titles, Gort Rugby Club is looking at ways to ensure that the club continues to be a sporting mainstay of the local community while all the time looking for more members and active participation. We are also actively looking to welcome back as many old friends as possible who were previously involved in the club to get involved again at any level, be it attending games through to fund raising and other activities.
